NFL has no timetablefor Favre inquiry

CHICAGO — Commissioner Roger Goodell said there is no timetable for completing an investigation of a report that alleges Vikings quarterback Brett Favre sent racy text messages and lewd photos to a former Jets employee.

"We're just looking for facts now," Goodell said Tuesday at the one-day owners meeting. "I am going to deal with it as we get the facts."

The league is looking into allegations revolving around Jenn Sterger, a Jets employee when Favre played for them in 2008 currently working for the Versus cable network. The investigation started Thursday, when Deadspin.com posted voice messages and photos he allegedly sent to the graduate of Tampa's Gaither High.

Tuesday, Sterger's manager, Phil Reese, released a statement from her: "This is something that allegedly happened two years ago. We don't want a quick resolution, but the proper resolution."

Monday, Reese declined to say if Sterger was cooperating with the league or had retained a lawyer but issued a statement saying, "We're looking at all our options right now and our only concern is what's in Jenn's best interest."

Goodell added he has no plans to meet with Favre, "But if it is something that would help us get to a conclusion and it is warranted, I will do so."

Favre has not responded to questions about the report.

Madden rips Singletary: Hall of Fame coach John Madden said 49ers coach Mike Singletary should not have yelled at quarterback Alex Smith on national TV Sunday. "A lot of things go on in a game that you're not proud of as a coach," Madden said. "That's really not part of coaching. Sometimes, I worry about that. I see youth football and I see high school football and coaches yelling at players, and I cringe when I see it. I think people get the picture that's what coaching is. And believe me, that's not what coaching is."

Bears: Quarterback Jay Cutler, who sustained a concussion on Oct. 3, is expected to practice without limitations today then start Sunday, the NFL Network reported. The team declined to comment.

Jets: Star cornerback Darrelle Revis said his left hamstring felt "very sore" after Monday's game. Coach Rex Ryan said there was swelling and he's not sure if Revis will play Sunday. Revis had missed the previous two games.

Saints: Running back Julius Jones was signed and kicker John Carney cut. Jones was cut by the Seahawks after they acquired Marshawn Lynch on Oct. 5. New Orleans is without Reggie Bush (broken right leg) and Pierre Thomas (left ankle). Garrett Hartley, whom Carney replaced but remained on the roster, will resume kicking duties. And ex-Florida running back DeShawn Wynn was released. He appeared in four games, playing special teams.

Vikings: Starting cornerback Cedric Griffin is out for the season with a right knee injury sustained Monday. Coach Brad Childress did not say when Griffin was hurt and stopped short of saying it's a torn ACL but did say, "It's probably headed that way." Griffin tore his left ACL in last season's NFC title game and was playing only his second game since.

TAMPA — The Bucs released punter Chris Bryan on Tuesday. In five games, the former Australian rules football player averaged 37.4 yards with a 34.2-yard net. Three punters worked out Tuesday: Brent Bowden, T.J. Conley and Robert Malone. Bowden, a sixth-round pick by the Bucs in April, was cut at the end of training camp.
