The Money Behind John Edwards: Heiress Rachel ‘Bunny’ Mellon, Age 100 - Clare O'Connor - Filthy Rich - Forbes

Rachel 'Bunny' Mellon.

One of the most telling details in today’s indictment of two-time presidential candidate John Edwards comes in the form of a note from a supporter, sent to former aide Andrew Young in 2007. The donor is described in the indictment as ‘Person C’, but is widely understood to be reclusive banking heiress Rachel Mellon, or ‘Bunny’ to her friends. In the note, Mellon, aged 96 at the time, defends Edwards from media ribbing (he’d just spent $400 on a haircut) — and appears to provide evidence that led to today’s indictment for receiving illegal campaign contributions:

Big Indian IT cos can 'twist' new H1B visa system - The Times of India

But immigration lawyers the new system can be twisted, to one's favour by stuffing it with a large number of applications, and thus increasing chances of selection.

SUMMARY JUDGMENTS: Our daily legal-news aggregator for June 3

FDA insider-trading probe expands : A Justice Department investigation of stock trades based on inside information from the Food and Drug Administration is widening beyond the government scientist charged two months ago in the case, the Wall Street Journal reported. The DOJ and the Securities and Exchange Commission originally suggested any illegal activity was limited to FDA chemist Cheng Yi Liang and his son. But people familiar with the matter told the Journal officials are now seeking information from a second FDA scientist and believe the Liangs' activities involved other federal employees. Agency approval or disapproval of a drug or medical device can cause stocks to rise or fall precipitously, making advance knowledge of such announcements a highly lucrative – if blatantly illegal – piece of financial information.

Immigration News

In a landmark decision that has broad implications for immigration enforcement at the state level, the United States Supreme Court Thursday upheld the Arizona Legal Workers Act. Passed  in 2007. The Act has two major components: (1) it requires Arizona employers to use the federal E-Verify system; and (2) it allows Arizona to suspend or revoke the business licenses of employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens. The Chamber of Commerce filed a lawsuit in 2007 seeking to strike down the Arizona law, arguing that both provisions were preempted by federal law.  However, in Thursday’s 5-3 decision in Chamber of Commerce v. Whiting, the Supreme Court rejected the Chamber’s arguments and held that Arizona’s law is constitutional.

How Telemarketers and Debt Collectors Obtain Your Mobile Phone Number

(Journal Record (Oklahoma City, OK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Giannina Marin said it was her Type A personality and desire to accomplish a task that led her to choose a career in the legal profession.

"I am pretty 'Type A' and have always been about getting things done. I probably get it from my parents, whose very strict policy was never to promise as little as a piece of candy if they weren't 100 percent sure it would happen," Marin said. "It seemed to me that lawyers are somehow always necessary to get anything done in the world. So, I wanted to become a lawyer so I could know how to get things done. It is kind of neat to have someone come to you with a far-fetched project or difficult idea and put it together and make it happen." Marin graduated cum laude with bachelor's degrees in finance and criminology from the University of Florida in 2006 and magna cum laude with a juris doctorate from the University of Florida College of Law in 2008. While in law school, she served as an intern for the Hon. Juan R. Torruella, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit. In addition to receiving awards for excellence in constitutional law, evidence, property, and wills and trusts, she was a recipient of the University of Florida Pro Bono Certificate for her pro bono work. She also served as a board member and treasurer of the John Marshall Bar Association as well as a board member of the Florida Law Review.
