B OSTON -- Federal prosecutors have again suggested that the Cape and Islands district attorney tipped off two men that they were under investigation for running an illegal gambling operation.

Two Dennis men and one man from Barnstable pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Boston this week to operating an illegal sports betting business.

The federal prosecutor alleged the trio shut down their illegal betting operation, which reportedly grossed about $2,000 a day, after they were tipped off in 2006 by "an elected official" in the district attorney’s office.

Although prosecutors did not mention a name, District Attorney Michael O’Keefe is the only elected official in the office. He was elected in 2002.

O’Keefe told the Cape Cod Times on Thursday that he has had nothing to do with any gambling operation.
