One of the few political contests in November that doesn't feature an incumbent is the race for DuPage County Board chairman.
With Robert Schillerstrom stepping down after 12 years in that office, there is going to be a fresh face no matter who wins.
In that race, longtime Republican state Sen. Dan Cronin of Elmhurst is taking on Carole Cheney, a Democrat and political neophyte from Aurora.
Both are experienced attorneys, so if you are one of those folks who think there are just too many lawyers in government, this is not a race that is going to make you happy.
Cronin has been in the Illinois General Assembly for nearly 20 years, while Cheney has been involved in government affairs but has never stood for election.
Like every other candidate this year, they have picked up on the buzzwords and both embrace "accountable" and "transparent" government. But then there is no percentage in saying one endorses "unaccountable" and "opaque" government and anyone who is cynical of candidates who espouse this certainly has a right to be.
Cheney supports the DuPage County Board's recent controversial decision to issue $70 million in bonds to upgrade the county's infrastructure, while Cronin opposed it. We think that doing the projects now -- which involved roads, flood control and other projects - makes sense while interest rates are low and agree with Cheney even though any government expenditure is apt to be roundly criticized given the state of the economy.
When the County Board approved rule changes that took away some of the chairman's control in the appointment of board committee members, Cheney supported it while Cronin said, basically, he had more important things on his mind. We agree with Cronin on this one.
Cronin's record in the General Assembly includes a lot of voting against increased taxes and fees. We trust that if elected he will bring this type of frugality to Wheaton.
Largely based on his record in the Senate, we give a slight nod to Dan Cronin for DuPage County Board chairman.
