PLEASE, please, please make sure that when you go on your winter sports holiday you are adequately insured.

Solicitors Russell Jones & Walker are warning those heading for the piste of the hidden costs of ski accidents, with children and first-time skiers particularly prone to injury.

According to the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA), skiing virgins are around twice as likely to be involved in an accident than those more experienced on the slopes.

They also found that under-17s account for 35 per cent of accidents but make up just 21 per cent of the skiing population.

Paul Kitson, personal injury lawyer and managing partner at Russell Jones & Walker, said: "Although skiing has become safer over the past few decades, it's still essential that people are aware of the risks involved, particularly since insurance isn't a universal requirement.

"As well as the risk of injuring yourself, there's also a risk of a third party being harmed.

"Both of these can prove expensive in terms of medical costs and compensation claims, unless you are covered by a good insurance policy."
