On the ballot: Judicial merit retention votes

Florida Supreme Court and appellate judges are subject to merit retention votes, in which they face voters in a yes-or-no vote as to whether they should keep their jobs. New judges face their first vote in the first general election that occurs more than one year after their appointment by the governor, and every six years thereafter. Early voting for the Nov. 2 election begins Monday.

Charles T. Canady, born 1954, of Lakeland.

Education: Bachelor's degree, Haverford College; law degree, Yale Law School.

Professional: Attorney, appointed to the court by Gov. Charlie Crist, 2008, currently chief justice. Second District Court of Appeal judge, six years; general counsel to Gov. Jeb Bush, one year; member of U.S. House of Representatives, seven years; member Florida House of Representatives, six years.

Jorge Labarga, born 1952, of Wellington.

Education: Bachelor's and law degrees, University of Florida.

Professional: Attorney, appointed to the court by Crist, 2009. Fourth District Court of Appeal judge, one year; Palm Beach County circuit judge, 13 years; private practice, four years; prosecutor, five years; assistant public defender, three years.

James E.C. Perry, born 1944, of Longwood.
