A Florida Sheriff’s deputy, who formerly worked as an Alabama Bureau of Investigation officer, was fired last week after being arrested on a DUI charge earlier this month.
The suspect, 43, was arrested Oct. 2 at 12:30 a.m. and charged with DUI, according to Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Steve Preston.
Preston said the the now former cop was stopped on U.S. Highway 98 for driving his motorcycle 30 mph over the speed limit, then subsequently failed a field sobriety test.
Geneva County Sheriff Greg Ward said the former deputy was off duty when the arrest happened, and Ward fired him when he returned to work last Friday.
The former police officer was arrested and charged with DUI in Dothan in June 2005 while he was an ABI investigator.
According to a Dothan Eagle file story, Dothan police found he passed out at the wheel of his state-owned truck.
Ward said he knew about the 2005 arrest prior to hiring him three years ago.
“I looked at the situation that happened years ago, talked to the people he worked with, the state and the City of Dothan,” Ward said. “A guy made a mistake, came to me years later and asked for a chance. We discussed his situation, and he was pretty well told it would not be tolerated. I gave him an opportunity to continue his law enforcement career, and he failed.”
Despite that failure, Ward characterized the former cop as a good deputy who is well-liked in the community.
