Step 1: It really helps if you know what type of inmates you are looking for. There are essentially three types.

Federal prisoners are sentenced for federal crimes and is housed in federal prisons. Federal prisons arelocated in the United States. These are people who are incarcerated in a prison in the state. Not all states have online search tools, but most do. There will be a search of the state wide. There are county prisoners. These are inmates who are convicted of crimes, torts and crimes in general have a sentence of less than 2 years.These people are housed in facilities in the county jail in the general jurisdiction of the sheriff. Some agreements with state prisons county jails to house prisoners because of overcrowding. There will be a county wide search.
