The National Weather Service predicts fires will continue in the southwest. Fierce thunderstorms are expected today in parts of the north and in South Florida. Blizzard warnings were issued in the Midwest, while tornado, thunderstorm and flashflood warnings hold along the Gulf.

SANTA CRUZ - This time last year, UC Santa Cruz literature professor Margo Hendricks was preparing to retire after two decades on the tree-studded campus.

I have some idea of what at least three lawyers went through this morning when the FBI seized the three largest and most profitable online poker and gambling websites and indicted eleven executives for money laundering. I had a business client get seized by the feds once – dozens of FBI and other federal agents took everything out of their office of greater value than the dust bunnies in the storage room, Froze their business and personal bank accounts, and enjoined them from filing bankruptcy without leave of court. And to make matters worse, we were denied access to any of our own client’s records, which left us with something of a paucity of evidence with which to defend ourselves. We put up as valiant a fight as we could, but at the end of the day with no evidence and no assets, our clients folded and consented to an almost laughably oppressive permanent injunction and counted themselves lucky to have not been imprisoned, and three weeks’ worth of blowing off all of our other clients was for naught (and we never got paid, which made it a really bad deal for us).

CAMDEN, N.J., April 12 (UPI) -- A transgender New Jersey man says he was unfairly fired from his job supervising men giving urine for drug testing.
El'Jai Devoureau, 39, of Gloucester County has sued Urban Treatment Associates, a drug treatment center in Camden, the Philadelphia Daily News reported Tuesday. The Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund filed the lawsuit on his behalf Friday in Superior Court in Camden.

From tomorrow (April 6th) a new set of divorce rules will come into effect in all county courts in England and Wales and with the new rules come new forms and new terminology as the court service attempts to bring the procedure of a divorce into the 21st Century.
The rules introduce changes in terminology as well as procedure. Decrees of divorce will henceforth be known as matrimonial orders, and financial orders will replace ancillary relief proceedings. They place a greater emphasis on mediation, and aim to simplify the way the courts are run.
GUATEMALA CITY — A group of lawyers filed suit to block the divorce being sought by Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom that would allow his wife Sandra Torres de Colom to seek the presidency.
Judge Mildred Roca said the petition filed in the Central American nation's Supreme Court seeks to "suspend the process of divorce" of the first couple.

AUSTIN, Texas - A condemned man is still fighting his execution scheduled for tomorrow in Huntsville, after a district judge ruled that new procedures do not violate state law. Lawyers for Cleve Foster are appealing that decision today, insisting that the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) ignored the need for a public review process before replacing a no-longer available execution drug.

A judge has thrown out a tax evasion and fraud case against designing duo Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.
Prosecutors alleged the pair had each failed to pay taxes on undeclared income of euro416 million ($588 million) by moving their business to Luxembourg in 2004.
Judge Simone Luerti ruled Friday that there was no evidence of criminal activity, and refused to file charges. The criminal case ends there, but the designers may still face tax authority scrutiny.

BOSTON - Students from a South Hadley charter school on Friday won the state's mock trial championship, besting a team from Boston's top public high school.
The Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter Public School, noted for its mock trial program, won the championship for the first time since 2005. The team lost in the finals last year and has often qualified for the finals in recent years.
